Outdoor Furniture Product Care

As the sun comes out and the weather gets warmer you’re going to find yourself spending more time outside. This means your outdoor furniture from JYSK is going to be put to the test so it’s important to know how to care for your furniture.

General Product Care Guidelines:

The easiest way to get the most out of your purchase is to simply keep it clean. This can mean different things for different materials but, for the most part, it just involves brushing off loose dirt, wiping down with soap and water, and rinsing off with a garden hose.

Some other tips to give your furniture some added longevity include:

Storing wood furniture somewhere where the air can circulate while avoiding overly dry or warm areas. A garage or carport is ideal.
Avoiding pressure washing your cushions. Many of our outdoor fabrics have a backing that can harbour mold and mildew if damaged or punctured. Instead, opt for a nylon bristle brush and a little elbow grease to get these items looking their best.
If you choose to protect your furniture by covering it in plastic when not in use, be sure air can still circulate to prevent rotting or fungus growth.

Material Specific Product Care:

Natural Woods – Hardwoods like Eucalyptus require very little maintenance. To keep your hardwood or hardwood accented furniture clean, simply wash with soap, water, and a bristle scrub brush and rinse clean a few times a season. If left untreated, it will weather to a soft grey though this is purely cosmetic. Also, be sure to check and tighten all screws or bolts at least once a season or as needed. Store in a covered area at a moderate temperature during the off season.
Durawood® – Requiring very little maintenance during its life cycle, if you find your Durawood® product has become dirty, cleaning with soap and water will be sufficient.
Aluminum – Similar to steel, caring for aluminum or aluminum framed furniture is fairly straight forward. Simply clean with a wet cloth and an acid-free cleaning product as needed, tighten the bolts regularly, and store in a cool, dry place during the off-season (a garage or carport is perfect). Try to prevent the powder coating on powder coated aluminum products from being scratched during use as this protects the aluminum from rusting underneath.
Steel and Steel Mesh – Similar to aluminum your steel furniture can be assured a long life by simply cleaning with a wet cloth and an acid-free cleaning product as needed. Also, be sure to tighten all bolts throughout the season and store in a cool, dry place when not in use (a garage or carport is perfect). Try to prevent the powder coating on E-Coated products from being scratched during use as this protects the steel from rusting underneath.
Poly Rattan/Petan®/Artwood – These synthetic materials will usually come clean with just soap, water, and a soft brush. For more stubborn dirt, you can use a gentle cleaning detergent. A quick wipe and rinse should have furniture made from these materials back to their original condition in no time.
Glass/Tempered Glass – Either a damp cloth or household glass cleaner will have your glass surfaces sparkling in no time.
Wrought Iron – Warm soapy water is all you’ll need to clean up any wrought iron products. Be sure to dry thoroughly.
Weather-net® mesh – This mesh material is easy to clean with a cloth and some warm soapy water. Be sure to dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent wear.
Textilene Mesh – This mesh material is easy to clean with a cloth and some warm soapy water. Be sure to dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent wear.
Oxford Polyester Fabric – To prevent wear, it is best to hand-wash this fabric with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly afterwards.
Polyspun Fabric – To prevent wear, it is best to hand-wash this fabric with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly afterwards.
Granite – A durable material, simply hand-wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly if necessary.
Painted Concrete – A durable material, simply hand-wash with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly if necessary.
Polyester (Gazebos) – For gazebos with removable panels or covers, remove items to be washed, soak in warm soapy water, hand-wash, and let air dry. Gazebos should not be used in strong wind conditions or left outside during winter.
